It has transpired that President Grevy has apologised in the name of France to King Alfonso for the manner in which His Majesty was received by the people on his arrival here. The President made the apology as the king was most indignant, and was preparing to depart immediately.

King Alfonso left to-day for Madrid, notwithstanding the request of President Grevy that he should remain a day longer. The French Press generally deplore the outrage on the King, and warmly condemn the conduct of the people of this city.

Much excitement prevails in this city in consequence of the treatment of King Alfonso by the Parisians.
Hon&kong, October 2.
News is to hand from Canton that the European named Logan, who shot a Chinaman in an affray which took place in that city last August has been tried for murder and been sentenced to seven years" imprisonment. The Chinese populace has expressed great discontent at the leniency of the Court, and much uneasiness prevails in the city.
ATae French in Tonquin, Latest intelligence from Tonquin states that the combined French expeditions left Hanoi and Haiphong, to operate against the Anamite position at Bacuich.

At the annual meeting held today for the election of Lord Mayor, Alderman R. N. Fowler was chosen for that office, despite the usage of livery.
O'Donnell was committed for trial for the murder of James Carey at Port Elizabeth. ; '■■
At the meeting to~day- of the Irish Convention now being held at Leeds, Mr Parnell's executive was elected, and it was resolved that active exertions should be used in connection with the approach' ing municipal elections.

The ship Harold Haarfgefl from Boston to Wellington, put back to repair da mages sustained during a recent succession of heavy gales.

King Alfonso was received to day by President Grevy, but was hooted by the people along the entire route to the President's mansion.
Official despatches from Tonquin state that since the recent defeat of the " Black Flags " they have retired from Singkan, apparently fearing a further encounter with the French troops.
St. Petersburg, September 29.
The Russian Government is adopting a conciliatory policy in regard to the present crisis in Bulgaria.
Calcutta, Sept. 29.
Intelligence is to hand from Cabul that further fighting has taken place between the Ameer's troops and rebel Ghilzais, resulting in the defeat of the former with heavy loss.

Messrs Healey, Small, and O'Connor, M.P.'s have been assailed at the meetings, and the campaign in Ulster has been abandoned. ■
The Her Mr Shaw's case is exciting strong public feeling against the action of France. The French Press adopt a very defiant tone.
London, September 29. The frozen meat ex Mataura has been sold for soap boiler's purposes at a halfpenny per pound. None of it was marketable for ordinary consumption.
