The Government to-day introduced fresh taxation proposals for the consideration of the House of Assembly.

The Customs returns for last quarter show that the revenue has decreased by £15,000, compared with the September quarter of 1882.

The general elections are still proceeding. The polling for five electorates announced to-day gives a largo majority of opposition candidates returned to the new parliament. *

Melbourne, Yesterday. Tho Victorian revenue for the quarter amounts to £1,310,000, being a decrease of £13,000 compared with the corresponding period last year. During the same period the Customs revenue , decreased, by £2000, excise £16,000, and territorial revenue by £37,000. The receipts from railways, however, hare increased £1000 during the quarter. AdeliAjde, Yesterday. The South Australian revenue for the quarter-ended September 30th amounted to £495,000,.being a decrease! of £32,000 compared with the corresponding quarter of last year. Daring the period the revenue from Customs duties decreased by £21,000, 'sad- that from land by £22,000.

Harry Thomas, a customer of the branch bank at Heathcote, where he carries on business as an auctioneer, entered the city office, and mounted the table in the centre of the chamber, shouting " revenge," and then drawing a revolver, attempted to commit suicide, firing first at the ceiling and then at his head, inflicting serious wounds, which, however, are not expected to prove fatal.
