COUNTY COUNCIL.
A special meeting was held yesterday. ' Present—Crsßrodie (Chairman), Bagnall, Bull, Ooutts, Deeble, Fraser, Murdoch, and Thorburn. The Chairman stated that the meeting had been called for the purpose of taking the final steps towards the obtaining of the gran's applied for under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. ' The rate proposed to be struck, viz, -£d in the £, would amount in the Totara Uiding to over £136, and in the Ohinemuri division to more than £356, and the amounts required in connection with the work to be done in the districts were £66 and £266 I respectively. It was resolved, on the motion of Cr Bagnall, seconded by Cr Fraaer, that the Council do strike a rate of fd ia the£ upon the rateable value of the property in the Totara and Ohiaemuridis tricts recurriug annually for ten years, the first payment to be due on March 1,1884. Crs Thorburn and Coutts—a sub* committee appointed to report on an application made by the Ucuben Parr G-.M.Co. asking permission to deposit mullock in the Moanatairi Creek tramway reserve—recommended that permission be given on" condition that a proper wall is built to the satisfaction of the Engineer, entirely clear of the tramway sleepers, and that the company become responsible for any damage or loss that may result. The tramway lessees wrote disclaiming any desire to impede mining, but asking the Council to accept all responsibility for any damage that mijjht be done by the mullock rolling from the tip. After a-lengthy and animated discussion, Cr Deeble moved that the Council regretted it could not adopt the recommendation of the commitiee, and that the Mining Inspector's attention be called to the state of the mullock tips in the Moanataiari Creek, that of the Eeuben Parr mine in particular ; that he be requested to see the matter put right, otherwise Government would be held responsible for any damage resulting.—Cr Fra^er seconded, and it was carried by the Chairman's easting vote. — Regarding the bridge over the Karaka Creek erected jointly by the Council and Mr W. S. Greenville, and which requires re-erection, it was resolved after considerable discussion, that the bridge be left where it is, and new timber procured for any work undertaken in the neighborhood. It was resolved that the Surveyor give a complete report on the matter of raising the Kauaeranga Valley Boad in the j neighborhood of the booms an additional height of 4s feet, with 18 feet of roadway, a copy of which is to be sent to Mr Stone upon its being prepared, to see what he would propose. The meeting then rose.
