This day. Joseph Hedley, a well-known drover, lost his life under -peculiar circumstances on Sunday. The deceased and two others were engaged in oroassing a mob of sheep over the Waipawa river. It was a bitterly cold day.'and there was a high wind. The sheep Were exceedingly troublesome, and many of them had to be carried. The men were working from .s'3o a,m. to 3 30 ;.m. before the laat of tbe sheep got over, 'he deceased then fell exhausted into the river. Medical assistance was instantly obtained, but with no avail, Hedley sue-
cumbing at B'3o pm. The deceased was a sober, steady, trustworthy man The following racehorses engaged in the late Steeplechase were sold yesterday: —Dliudeen, £80; Reform. £44; Lady B»b, £35 ; and Joker, 25 guineas. The South British Company bought from the Colonial Bank a vacant section, and intend building an office to cost about £6000.
