* This day. ' r The steamer Tui which left here for Wanganui yesterday afternoon, returned this morning with the steamer Huia in tow. The latter vessel was bound from Wanganui to Wellington, and when about 20 miles north of Kapiti broke her shaft close to the screw. She was picked up by the Tui about an hour afterwards. Owing- to the reported striking of a large gold-bearing reef, in the Golden Crown claim during last week the shares in this company rose fnrm 4s to 10s f and at the meeting of shareholders held last night, Mr Mace announced that a rich reef four feet thick bad been struck, bearing atone superior to the ; reef which had been known to crush 6 to B,ounces to the ton. The mine-manager, con* firmed this. Shares this morning hare advanced to 17s 6d, and shares in the other claims are also rapidly rising.
