Melbourne, This day. It has transpired that Hon. James Service has telegraphed to the other colonies inviting them to support the proposed annexation of the New Hebrides. All Governments have replied excepting New Zealand. The Government of South Australia has expressed a cordial approval of the proposal, and the Governor, fr William Robinson, has telegraphed to Earl Derby urging his approval. Mr Service has telegraphed to the Agent General of Victoria in London instructing him to take steps to further the object in view.

Arrived,yesterday morning: U.S S.Co.'s Hauroto, from Wellington.—The Orient steamship Austral has sailed for Glasgow in excellent trim. ■

The Western railway extension from Nevertiro to Nyngau, a distance of 36 miles, was opened to day. The total length of line open from Sydney is 377 miles.

His Excellency the Governor unveiled a statu of the late Mr S. Mort, which is erected opposite the Exchange. A vast multitude of people were present, and an eloquent oration was delivered by the Hon W.B. Dalley.

It is reported here that the Colonial Secretary of Queensland has received a telegram from the Earl of Derby, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, stating that Sir Arthur Kennedy, the Governor ofl Queensland, died at Aden on the 3rd instant, while on his voyage to England. Laitnceston, Yesterday The ship Asterope, which went ashore at Low Head, has been abandoned to the underwriters', and is expected to become a total wreck.
