COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual meeting.was held yesterday. Present—Crs Brpjie (Chairman) Bagnall, Bull, Coufcts, Fraser, Murdoch, Porter, and Thorburn.—Previous minutes were read and confirmed.—The Bank of New Zealand required a reduction of the County overdraft, and suggested retrenchment. The Council were not apparently much upset by the communication, and resolved to reply that it would endeavour to do as the bank desired.—lt was resolved that the report of the Board of Works recommending the formation of the Otunui road at a width of eight feet, be adopted. The manager of the New Eureka GM. Co. protested against the reduction from 14 feet, as originally intended, but the Chairman explained that if the contract was accepted for the greater width, the balance of the Government grant for it would only leave a sum of £118 for metalling— Vouchers for gold duty and revenue for £221 15s were received—The "carrying out of repairs to culverts across the Karaka Road, and over the Noke Noke Creek across Itolleston street at an estimated cost of £80 was authorised to bo done by the Borough Council; each body bearing the cost. The Town Clerk of the Borough forwarded a petition from Par'awai ratepayers to th« Government, praying that the Parawai Riding of the County might be merged in the Borougb.-<-A. complaint was received from Mr A. Thorpe, relative "to the delay in deepening and widening the outfall drain on the Eotokohu Swamp and stating that he would hold the; Council responsible for any damage done to the pasture of the Manuka Block thereby. —The residents of Irishtown asked that the water should be* laid on to their premises on tho same conditions as those allowed to Block 27. It was decided to do the work upon payment by the applicants of 10s each.—la connection with a letter from Mr Coombes, that he would be compelled to close the road through his paddock in the Kauaeranga Valley unless it was properly fenced off. It was resolved to ask toe Burvey Department to lay off the road.—ln response to Mr Garvey's complaint as to the state of the Waiotahi road, it was resolved to call for tenders for metalling the worst portions of the road.—lt was resolved to employ tyro men to effect repairs on the Te Aroba
road, which were necessary to allow the mails to be carried through. — The petition of Wai hi ' residents, asking the Government to use their influence with the Council to have the bridge erected on the Bite near the township, instead of on the old road, was received from the Public Works Department, and the Council resolved that the Minister be informed that the Council has no funds available for such a purpose, but they would'carry out the work if funds were placed at the disposal by Government. A petition from Paeroa residents, re tho construction of a wharf in" place of bntf recently washed away, was received, and the matter of wharf accommodation was referred to the .Board of. Wjoirks.r-Tjie District Engineer reported that the i contractor was liable for the completion of his contract on the ThamesTauranga road, without any extras «n account of recent floods.—Complaints were received as (o the state of the Hape Road and others in its vicinity, which were ordered to be attended to, and Mr Cummings, of Owharoa, was recommended to " see about" the outlet of drainage from his property .—The. -reports of the Board of Works and \Erigi-? neer, as published by us yesterday, were received.—The footpath in Paeroa to the Post Office and school was ordered to be put in order.—The following Financial Statement was adopted :—•' Receipts: General Government subsidy, £220; gold duty and goldfields revenue, £256 14s 6d ; water, race, £175 13s lid; rates, £100 19s 6d; dog regie. tration, £15; miscellaneous (sale of iron £60, aid to roads £4), £64; publican's license (transfer), £2 ; total, £834 7s lid; to balance, £5773 14s 7d. Grand total, £6608 2s 6d.—Expenditure : Bank balance Ist May, £5813 5s 7d; April accounts paid in May, £79416s 11. Total, £6608 2s ,6d. —May accounts: For roads, bridges, and contracts, £389 18s 4d; balance due to contractor water race, £186, 12s ; printing, dog collars, &c, £22 6s 8d ; aid to drainage, £20; salaries, £54 3s 4d; total, £672 14s 4d ; balance brought down, £5773 14s 7d. Grand total, £6446 8s lid.
The 'Water Race Committee reported that they had invited applications from persons willing to undertake the duties of working overseer on the County race, and Mr John Law, the late couralctor, was selected for the post, his management of the race having been very satisfactory. The Engineer was also empowered to engage two additional men. The Committee recommended that, in consideration of the impecuniosity of the Golden Crown Gr. V1.C0., the days upon which their battery was hung up for repairs should not be charged for, but this re* mission should not be taken as any precedent -for the future. Tte water account of the Queen of Beauty Co., was considered, and the Council declined to continue the supply unless security were given for the amount due. Crs Brodie, Bagnall and Murdoch were appointed to approve the securities offered. It was arranged to charge for all water used by the battery, but to allow the pump all the spare water, and only charge for it in the event of prospecting operations resulting successfully. The Treasurer was instructed to sue for ail arrears of water due. It was resolved that no monies be paid upon any contract unless the bonds have been signed. Instructions .were issued to prosecute persons cutting down trees planted by the Council. ■ •,. ,
