Tawhiao at Tauranga.
(Pjee Pbbss Association.) Tau.banga, This day.
Tawhiao arrived at llangawae, with 200 Waikatos, on the 27thj and was met by two strong bodies of Tauranga natives, numbering 300, and many women. These commenced.the reception in a semi-mili-tary fashion, advancing, saluting, and retiring in alternate order for about half a mile in regular Maori haka style. The King entered the village on the east side, where the natives have erected a memorial to Tawhiao's late uncle, Hori Tupae. The reception inside the enclosure was vory impressive, the King weeping, and widows lamenting and wailing. After the ceremony Waikato addressed the assembly, and Tawhiao followed ; the Tau ranga chiefs replied. Great ceremony was observed, but was brought to an end by heavy rain. Tawhiao was clothed in a red hunting coat, with a mat overhis shoulders, and a white sheet around his loins; his legs and feet were bare, and he was bareheaded. He fleems poor, and has been invited to Tauranga ais a private guest. His next movements are uncertain, but he goes to Maketu, and returns to Waikato via the Lakes.
