OUR MINES.
QUEEN OF BEAUTY,
The pumps stopped at 12 o'clock last night, owing to the breakage in the WaioKaraka tunnel, and in consequence no work was going on in the mine to-day. The manager expects to be able to start again some time this evening, and the water should ba out in time for the 4 o'clock shift to go on to-morrow afternoon. The underhand stopes at No. 9 level hare been stopped, and a start has been made to stope ad both sides of the winze, above No. 10 level. The main drive here has been extended 12 feet past the winze, and the junction of the Queen of the May reef has just been met with. The latter is 18 inches wide, and looks well. The main reef now occupies the whole face of the drive, being four feet wide. No gold has been seen in it since Mr Wilson took charge, though it looks well. The crossreef which cut oil 1 the main one at No. 9 level will probably be met with soon, as the drive is at present under where it was cut at No. 9w The crosscut here has passed through a leader, but the manager is not sure whether it is identical with the last dropper from the winze. The small stringer in which gold was Been has not yet been cut. |
DEEP LEVEL CJROSS. In sinking the winze on the No. 2 reef, a body of stone on the footwall has been met with. It is about 4 inches wide, and a few colon of gold were seen in it when
breaking down a small portiou yesterday* It'is'dipping towards the No. 2, with which it should jurietion a f*w feet lower down. Its strike is also towards the latter reef going seaward. The contractors for the south crosscut at the 640 ft level will finish their 103 ft in a week, and wages men will then be put on. The drive will then be in 1145 ft from the Big Pump shaft, but there will still remain fully 100 feet to drive before the Imperial No- 2 reef may be expected to come to hand, calculating from its underlie between Nos. 3 and 5 levels. ! KIJRANUI HILL. J The manager reported yesterday as | follows :—"The drive for Hunt's lead is | now in a total of 28 feet, and continues in a ; fine class of ground for gold. The leader might be to hand during the week if it keeps its supposed course. Fourteen feet in all have been driven towards Barry's reef since starting. The difference attained in each drive is therefore very great, but this is easily accounted for, as the ground is very tight, and requires blasting all the time, whereas the other end is good working ground. Cook's lode : I cannot furnish you with anything new from this section ; the usual work is going ahead, and the same prospects as those which I mentioned last week.—Thos. HCbawforb." MARINER AND LONDON. At No. 5 level in the former mioe the digs on the footwall of the No. 2 reef are in respectively 12 and 15 feet. The country is of a favorable class, and is very similar to what was met with at No. 4 level. In the London three.shifls are in one die. which is in 15ft, but the other, which has not been so regularly manned, has only been advanced Bft since starting. No breaking down will take place in either mine for a few days.
