The Daily News, in a leader this morning, announces that it has reason to believe that in the event of annexation of New Guinea being decided upon, it will be undertaken by the Imperial Government, and will not be left to tbe colonies. Moscow, May 20 The ceremony of blessing the banners tb.be used in connection with the approaching coronation of the Czar took place here to-day. Paris, May 24. The commandant of the French expedition to Madagascar has forwarded adis* patch reporting that he has captured the Horas military posts in Sakalawa country and occupied the Custom House at Majanga, a town at the mouth of the i Ikupa river, on the north west coast of i the Island. The road to Antananarir, the i capital, has been secured by the troops s ; and great excitement prevails among tl<e natives in consequence of the attitude of the French. London, May 24. In the House of Commons to-day, Lord Fitzmaurice, the Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, stated, in rrply to a question, that the resumption of friendly rel; - tions with the Mexican Government was impending. The Hon. Evelyn Ashley, Under Secretary for the Colonies, replying to a question regarding the intention of the Government in the view of the recent fighting which had occurred between Cetewayo and certain of the Zulu kinglets, announced that Government would abstain from interference in Zululand at the present juncture.

Fifty suspected persons have been arrested in Moscow. The Times states that Mr Baring will succeed Lord Dufferin in Egypt. Mr Forster, in addressing the Abori* gines' Protection Society, insisted that if New Guinea was annexed all hostility towards the natives, and slavery, under whatever disguise, should be strictly forbidden. London, May 23. Six ranks of soldiers and Citizen Guards lined the route of the Imperial procession in Moscow, and the Czar rode entirely alone. Dr Macfarren has accepted the proffered honor of knighthood in connection with the opening of the .Royal Academy of Music. Baron de Lesseps' Suez Company re« quest the English Government to support the project for obtaining the land required for the construction of a second canal, parallel with the present canal, promising in return a reduction of charges and increased powers of control to England.
