The colonial wool sales opened to-day with a catalogue comprising 6600 bales. A fair demand was experienced. There was a good attendance of Home and Foreign buyers. The present series of the auction sales closes on June the 29th. Consols have advanced to 102^. New Zealand securities are unchanged. The market for Colonial breadstuff's is quiet, but firm at last quotations. Australian tallow dull.

Intelligence is to hand that a definite treaty of peace has been concluded between Peru and Chili. The former cedes Taena and Arica for a period of ten years, and at the expiration of that time a plebiscite is to be taken to decide whether the province shall be retained permanently by Chili.
James Filzharris, who has been tried as an accessory to the murder oi Lord Cavendish and Mr Burke, has been found guilty and sentenced to penal servitude for life.
Two more Phanix Park prisoners, Daniel Delaney and Thomas Martin, have confessed, and have been sentenced to death.
At a meeting of the National League, a resolution was passed protesting against the Pope's mixing in politics.
Pabis, May 15.
The Chamber of Deputies has passed a vote of credit of 5,000,000 francs to defray the expenses of the Tonquin expedition.
A rumour was current here to-day that the Comte de Chambord is dead. The news has not, however been confirmed.

London, May 15. The Times, says that the Imperial Government will not undertake the per» sonal charge of new Guinea, and advises that the Australian colonies should annex New Guinea, and undertake the administrationof its affairs instead of Queensland alone. .■■..•;.
