OAMARU.
Yesterday.
During Saturday the heaviest gale that has been experienced here for years swept into the bay, and broke over the breakwater. On Saturday evening, as tho schooner Friendship, which had como up from Port Chalmers, was attempt ing to come in under shelter, a heavy sea struck the vessel, and smashed the wheel. Signals of distress were hoisted by the captain,, and both anchors let; oat. The crew had for safety to take shelter below, as every wave was breaking over her, and swept the decks The seas increased, and the vessel gradually dragged ashore. About 8 o'clock the captain, finding the schooner near the land, slipped the anchors, and came ashore. The vessel being in ballast, was thrown in pretty high up on the beach. The crew, with assistance, was brought ashore safely. The Friendship appears to be uninjured, and will probably be launched again. The vessel is insured. The Friendship at the time of the accident was some distance from the breakwater, and under the full force of the seas. The weather has now cleared.
