Consols, lOf. Bank rate of discount remains at 3, and the market rate at 2-f per cent. The total reserve of notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £ 13,000,000, being a reduction of £600,000 during the week. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 38 per cent.- New Zealand securities are at the following prices:—s per cent. 10-40 loan, .107?; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 106; 4-| per cent. 1879-1904 loan 102|i 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 102f. Colonial bread stuffs continue quiet at last quotations. Adelaide wheat, 50s, ex warehouse ; New Zealand wheat, ex warehouse, 46s to 50s. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 34s 6d. The tital quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,400.000 quarters, being an increase of 80,000 quarters during the week. Australian tallow is at 52s for best beef, and 44s 6d for best mutton.

The Speaker of the House of Commons has vetoed a motion providing for the protection of the House of Parliament by a detachment of troops. \

J he two men named Casey and Flanagan, who were recently arrested at Liver* pool, have been arraigned at the looal Police Court on the charge of illegally landing explosives, and were remanded.

It is announced that Lord Justice Brett will succeed the late Sir Geo. Jessel as Minister of Rolls.

Intelligence, has been received here that the Apache Indians have taken- up arms and raided the whole settlements of New; Mexico and Arizona territories, and have massacred fifty Europeana. The Apaches threaten to annihilate settlers, and Government has despatched a strong body of troops to the latters's assistance.

St. Petebsbubg, March 31.

It has transpired that the police succeeded to»day in surprising a Nihilist rendezvous, where a large number of members of a secret society were assembled. A severe struggle took place, but ultimately eight persons were arrested, one of whom, however, committed suicide while in the hands of the police. A quantity of dynamite was also seized on the premises.

It has been agreed between the English and the Spanish Governments that Roch riquez and Gastello, two of the Cuban refugees who were surrendered to the Spanish Government by the police authorities at Gibraltar, shall now be released, but that Macco, the leader of the Cuban rebellion, shall be detained in custody as a prisoner of war..

The Bazutos have solicited to be placed under the direct rule of the Imperial Government;, but they are willing to submit to the rule of the Cape Government if the other cannot be obtained.

The House of Commons has passed a resolution in favour of sixpenny telegrams. The schooners now employed in Island cruising in connection with HM. ships on the Australian station are to be sold out of the.service, and it is reported that H.M. ships Goshawk and Swinger will be commissioned to replace them. Both are gunboats of 6430 tons, carrying four guns each.

The Italian Press deny that the P. and O. Company have abandoned Brindisi as a port of call. The company explain that tbeir plans for the -resumption of the Marseilles route are yet incomplete. Considerable excitement prevails throughout Albania, owing to fears being entertained of an Austrian occupation. The Fenians have threatened to blow up the General P<jst Office, London, with dynamite unless tbe prisoners now in custody on charges in connection with the Phoenix Park murders are immediately released.

The American Government refuses at present to interfere with the Irish dynamite party in the United Stateß.

Lord Salisbury lias declared that, if the colonies and foreign States increase protective duties, England will have to rediscuss the whole question of free trade.
