WELLINGTON.

This day.

War to the knife is still raging between Chantrey Harris and Fisher, the Mayor. The latter writes, in a sarcastic letter, to a local paper:—" Bat, after all, this party by the name of Harris is a decent old fellow. There is no bluster or fluster about him, no bombastic inflation, no empty-headed concett, no self assertion, no windy chatter about his own qualifies* tions—nothing of that sort; he is one of those shy, calm, retiring sort of men, who do not inflict any boredom upon any one—but, as I hare said, he is a parly by the name of Harris, who was once a celebrity in the Port of Bristol, a plaoe famous for the smartness of its coalwhippers, and for its ' guzzling Jacks and gorging Jimmies,' as Thackeray calls them. Not that Harris belonged to any of these dignified classes—indeed, I don't exactly know why he was regarded as wonderful, but I am assured that wonderful he was; Harris then, lam told, became in some way or other connected with ships and shipping, and sailed the salt sea and so on—all of which is per feetly honest and honorable, but is hardly the sort of training which fits a man to mould public opinion, or to control the newspaper mouthpiece of a great philan thropio institution."
