Yesterday. The North Canterbury Educational Institute today resolved to request the Minister of Education to take steps for the appointment of pupil teachers on probation three months prior to ultimate appointment, that being subject to the approval of the Inspector. The pupil teachers to be appointed for five years, none admitted but such as have passed the sixth standard; that the curriculum be the same throughout the colony ; that the fifth year examination of pupil teachers be the same as for E certificate; that all examinations be conducted from one centre. The Governor to-day visited the Kaiapoi woollen factory, the Belfast refrigerating works, the Maori Pah, and opened the Society of Arts' Exhibition, of which he consented to be patrou. The New Zealand Shipping Company announce their list of steamers for the regular monthly line, viz.: British King, British Queen, Penotauton, lonio, and Doric. All are new steel boats, the last two are recent additions to the White Star Atlantic steamers. Besides these, Messrs .Elder and Co., of Glasgow, are building three for the company, each of 4000 tons, to be completed this year. The British King has arrived at the Cape, and is expected to reach Wellington in the middle I of March.
