MJKirBOUBNE, Yesterday. The polling for 1 the general elections took piece to-day, The returns now to hand give the following results:—South Bourk''—Kejs elected by a large mr.jority ; Eooiney—D. Giliies elected by a large majority, pnd J. Shackel has, been returned by a small majority ; 5 Barwon— J. Levein elected by a small majority; West Bourke—A. Deakin elected by a large majority. Sir Bryan O'LogUlen was defeafad for this constituency by a small majority. Dalhousie—Mr J. G. Duffy elected by a small majority. Sydney, Yesterday. Owing to a squabble in the Legislative Assembly between John Mcllhone, member for the Upper Hunter, and H. Taylor, representative for Mudgee, both gentlemen have resigned their scats in the House, and both have announced their determination of contesting the election for the TacL.nt constituency of Mudgee. Seven fresh cases of small pox occurred on board the steamship Menmuir. All the sufferers are pr.sse.igers, six being Chinamen—-the seventh, a saloon passen6er, is a European. The patients hare all een removed to the Coast Hospital, at LitKe Bay quarantine station. There are

'* The polling for the general elections 1 took place to day, and up to the present time (10 p.m.) the returns show that the following number of candidates has been returned :—Constitutionalists, 19; Minis-,, terialists, 1; Independents, 4 ; Liberals,* 25. | Later (2 23). The elections have generally passed^off quietly, but there-was eonsiderableexcitement in the city to-night, and the streets are thronged. Sir Bryan O'Loghlen was present when the re>ult of the polling was announced ; his name was at the bottom -of the poll. The returns are as yet uncompleted. The following are the results already to hand:—Ararat: Elected, W. McLellan, by a small majority; defeated, 1). Jameson. Ballarat East: j Elected, J. James and J. Russell, both by I a small majority. Ballarat West: Elected, H. Bell by a large majority, and Major Smith by a large majority; Finchan and Joaes are ties for the third scat. Barwon: Elected, J. F. Leviea, by a small majority. Returns are now to hand regarding the election of members to eighty-four seats in the Assembly ; some, however, are as yet incomplete. The Argus, in its issue of this' morning, gives the followiug classification of elected members:—Ministerialists, 7; Constitutionalists, 37 ; Liberal, 32; Independents;^ 8. The Age classifies them as follows: —Constitutionalists, 33; Liberals', 35 ; Ministerialists, 16. The f general results, however, indicate the balance of power between the Constitutionalists and Liberal parties, and confirms the piobability of the formation of a Coalition Ministry.
