t Bunedin, Yesterday. The first Hay's attendance at the races is estimated at from eight to ten thousand.
Huedibs' Handicap : Milo, 1; Canard, 2; GangAwa, 3.. Wild Boy and Why INot also ran. Milo led all the way, and won rather easily. Time, 4«nins 30se<r. Champagne Stakes : Ouides, 1; Water Nymph, 2; Barnaby, 3. Ouides wa3 a strong favorite, and won all the way, winning by a length and a half. Dunedin Cup : Adamant (Sharp), 1; balvage (Derrifct), 2; King Quail (Butler) 3. The Poet, Welcome Jack, Lady .Emma, Sir Modred, Sir Garuet, and The Jilt also ran. Welcome Jack started first favorite at 2 to 1, Sir Modred and Lady Euirua being next in demand at 3 to 1. There was a good start. The Jilt got off with a commanding lead, Welcome Jack and Adamant following, with the others in a cluster. Afc the end of once round Tha Jilt stiil had firs'; place. Sir Modred, Salvage and Lady Emma now began to go. Up at the back of the course The Jilt fell back, and King Quail closed in, Adamant assumed the lead, Salvage came up and challenged Adamant; and the race was between the tv7o, Sir Modred and Lady Emma made their effort, and eoniiug
- o the straight cut, but could not kce ;it v >, and vWelcome Jack fell back ; King Quail and Poet followed the leaders up the straight, Salvage whipping hard, but he could not get within three-quarters of a length of Adamant; King Quail third.. Time, 3tnins. 40secs ; one second faster than at the previous year. In the paddock the betting against Adamant was 100 to 5 In the totalisator in one were 7 on Adamant of 470, and one oiher out of 286 ; Loth of these were £2 shares. The £1 totalisator showed 5 on him out of 348. Fleming, part owner of Adamant, is Baid to have won £3000.
Selling Eace : Amulet, 1; Violin, 2 Eebecca, 3. Jack and Sandy also ran. Won with the greatest ease by 10 lengths. Publicans' Handicap: Miss King (filly), 1 ; Dnna, 2 ; Nonsense, 3. These were the only starters. Luna was the favorite. Miss Zing led all the way, and won by two lengths. Time, 2mins. 14secs. Out of 329, 75 were on the winner.
Maiden Platr: The Jilt, 1; Matanaka. 2; Coupon, 3. Matanaka was the favorite at 2to 1. Won by a length and a half. Time, - 2mins 4ISPC9. Out of 933, 221 were on the winner. Stewards' Pce3e : Iris, 1; Taiaroa, 2 ; Leos, 3. After a good race it was won by about half a length. Time, 1 mio. 32secs. About £8003 was put through the totalisator.* This day. B AGING OLTTB HANDICAP. King Quail ... ... ... 1 Lady Emma... ... ... 2 Poet ... ... ... ... 3 Time, 3mins. City Stakes Handicap of 200sovs. for two year olds, five furlongs. Hyacinth (Butler), 7st slbs 1 Water Nymph (Thompson) Bat 51bs 2 Barnaby (Derrett) Bst... ... ... 3 Betting—sto4on Water Nympb. The three were despatched to a very uneven start, of which Hyacinth got well the best. The St. Alb n's colt fairly romped home as he pleased. A good race resulted for second place.
