WELLINGTON.

Yesterday. A man named Michael Hurley, engaged on the Manawatu railway works, has been seriously lDjured by the explosion of a powder box. The powder had been placed on the ground preparatory to its being used for blasting purposes. In doing so some of the powder appears to hare been spilled. The injured man, Hurley, was engaged in preparing a fuse for the-charge, and had lighted a portion of it for the purpose of testing, and after doing so he threw it on the ground, and it happened to" "fall among some of the powder which had been' spilled. The latter caught alight, and, forming a complete train to a bag which contained 13 or 14 pounds, caused the latter to explode. The unfortunate man Hurley was propelled violently for a distance of seTeral yards by the force of the explosion, and on being picked up it was found that his hair was burned off, his face much scorched, and that the skin and part of the flesh was burned off one of his arms. The sufferer was removed to the town for medical attendance. .This day. John McOullooh, baker of the steamer Eotomahana, has been missing since Sunday. He was last seen at 6 o'clock on the morning of that day as the vessel was nearing Wellington Heads, and at %he was missed. The sea waa very smooth at the time, and it ia believed he ha a committed auioide, as he had been despondent latterly. He is said to have friends in Dunedin. •'
