FATAL ACCIDENT.
A fatal accident happened at about half^past one o'clock this afternoon to a man named Ned Ellings, a miner in the employ of the Queen of Beauty Company. The unfortunate man had just come up from the Piako shaft, where he and some others were engaged getting out the old pipes, for the purpose of assisting to wind up a section,-and with his mates was walking behind the capstan arms so as to stop it should anything give way. It appears these arms pass very close to the stays, and Ellings, no doubt thinking he had time to do so, tried to pass the end of the arm when it was close to the stay, but failed, and was jambed against the latte.r He did not cry out, but his mates, noticing the capstan stop, saw at once that he was badly hurt, and "went to his assistance. A mes« senger was despatched for Dr Huxtable, and a stretcher was procured, on which he was conveyed to the Hospital. Dr Huxtable was immediately in atten* dance, and did what he could, but saw there were no hopes of his recovery fr6m the first. He expired in about 10 minutes after being admitted. The chest was literally crushed in, many of the blood vessels being ruptured. Ellings lives on the Tararu road, close to the Shotover Hotel, and was for a long time employed as trucker in the Moanatairi mine. He is well known, and leaves a wife and family to mourn his loss.
