John Bright has expressed himself as strongly opposed to armed intervention in the affairs of Egypt. He considers that provided the safety of the Suez Canal is assured, it is no part of the duty of England to direct the international policy of that country.
RELIEF FOR SUFFERERS IN
EGYPT.
Subscriptions are being raised throughout France for alleviating the suffering of Europeans who bare been compelled to fly from Egypt. In Paris it is proposed to organise a gigantic lottery of 10,000,000 francs to assist the movement.
THE THUNDERER SOUNDS
ALARM.
A Tunis leading article urges the Government to be prepared for eventualities, and warns them to be on their guard, and not to be lulled into a false security. The article insists that the army and navy should be thoroughly equipped, and the defences looked to. Russia is placing her navy in a state of preparation, and is adding 30 additional gunboats to her fleet. Very great activity prevails in Russian military circles at the present time, and the army is being placed on a first*class footing.
A DESTRUCTIVE STORM—IOO
PERSONS KILLED
A terrific hurricane is reported to have taken place in Emmetsburgb, lowa, U.S. Whole stieets were completely wrecked, and 100 inhabitants were killed before the storm abated.
EXTREMES MEET.
The Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr Tait) is decidedly favorable to the pro* ceediog of the Salvation Army, and has recently subscribed to their funds.
A STRIKING STRIKE
A serious disturbance has occurred in Albany, capital of New York County. A large number of platelayers, who had struck for an increase of wages, attacked their fellow laborers who would not join the movement, and a regular riot ensued, which was only quelled by the military being called out. Great numbers of persons were wounded, but fortunately no loss of life is reported.
RUSSIA ENCOURAGES COTTON
INDUSTRY
In order to develop the manufacture of cotton in Russia, the Government of that country has considerably reduced the import duty on the raw material.
NORWAY AIMIING AT REPUBLI-
OANISM.
The people of Norway are agitating for the clearance of that country from the kingdom of Sweden. They desire the formation of Norway into an independent Republic.
GUITEAU PRONOUNCED SANE.
The inquiry into the sanity of Guiteau has been concluded with the result that his sanity has been fully established.
BOWIE KNIVES FOR IRELAND.
Amongst the arms recently seized at Clerkenwell, and supposed to be destined for the nse of Fenians, are«a quantity of weapons similar in construction to the species of bowie knives, with which the Phoenix Park murders are supposed to have been committed. They are evidently of American manufacture.
A BROTHER'S LOVE.
The brother of Guiteau is making strenuous efforts to gain remission of his sentence in the plea of his sanity. He is striving, but with small chance of success, to obtain an interview with President Arthur, in order to plead his brother's cause.
Offman has been tried and convicted. He was sentenced to 7 years imprisoment with hard labor.
