WAITEKAURI.

(fbom a cobbespondent.)

Waitekaubi Dec. 10, 13SI

The battery resumed work last Wednesday, with twenty-two head of stamps ; twelve head on Butler's quartz, and ten head on Waitekauri No. 3 dirt. Butler's stuC." is showing up for a good return, five i or Bix ounces to the ton being expected, and as this party have about 2000 ounces of amalgam already on hand, they should have a good retorting this month. No. 3 stuff is showing up for 2 ounces to the ton, which is considered very go"od, as there was a large quantity of rough stuff sent to the mill. Some good crushing dirt is now coming to hand from the stope in this mine, and the manager is pushing the drive ahead on the hanging wall reef to pick up the main run of gold found by Butler and party in this intermediate level. The drive is now in 20 feet, and a further distance of 60 or 70 feet will cut the run. About 100 tons oF quartz are already in the paddock, which speaks well for the management. The Waitekauri Company have not yet seut any of their stuff to the mill, but intend to do co next week. The reef is still producing good grade stuff, and has been driven on about 50 feet on each side of the cross-cut, and averages about 2 feet thick. A considerable quantity of quartz is in the paddock and should give a good return.

Waitekatoi Extended. —Driving on the reef is still being continued aud gives good prospects. I >hcar another letder has been fouod in this ground, and the pro°.pectß from it are really good. The contractors in the Caledonian, Hawk, and City of Dublin claims are all making gocd headway in their respective drives, but nolhintj ot importance has yel been found in either.

Diamond Claim. — This claim is situated on the south end of the Youpg New Zealand and Welcome mines, and is, in my opinion, one of the bost pieces of ground in the district. Owing to the tramway being out of repair, very little work Ims been done here for some time, but the shareholders have agfin started work in raruesl, end expect to have a large ciushirg ready by the time the tramway is fioishfd. About 70 tons of g< od crushing dirt is already in hand, which is expect'd to yield over 3oz to the ton. A new leader was found in the foolwali this weak, and a fnw pounds of gocd specimens were obtained from it, with gold s?iil showing. Very little interest was shown in election matters here, excepting the Thames contest, the result of which has pleased everyone bere.
