A to-day's sitting of the Conference of the Committee of the Legislative Council, for the consideration of the influx of the Chinese Eegistration Bill, the question of a £10 poll tax upon all Chinese coming into the colony by land was discussed at length, and the representatives of the Council ultimately agreed to accede to the demand of the assembly for the retention of the clauses providing for the imposition of the tax.
1 A match between the English team and twenty two of the Maitland (N.8.W.) district cricketers was concluded at that town to-day, and. resulted in a draw in favour of the Englishmen.
Melbottbne, Thursday. In the Legislative Assembly today, a bill to legalise the totalisator was rejected by a majority of six. ■
A delajde, Thursday. Arrived, this morning: The Orient steamship Cotopaxi, from Plymouth. :-: Sir George Cumine Strahan, Governor of Tasmania is a passenger by the Cotopaxi. ■
