INVERCARGILL.

This day. !

Shanks, the late member has retired from the contest for Mai aura. Richardson and Capt. McKenzie are the other candidates.

(from oub own coekespondent.)

Auckland, This day.

Ec the Thames election a correspondent writes to the Auckland Star to the following effect: "If Sheehan decides to go for Wuitemata (and I think he would have a better chance for that constituency than for the Thames) the Borough contest will practically be between McCullough and Speight, as McG-owan will probably retire in McCullough's favor. Looking on Sheehan and McGrowau as scratched horses, the chances of the two remaining candidates are about equal. MeCullough has a large stake iv the place and will command publican and mining votes, while Speight anticipates a block vote from Good Templars. Both gentlemen are professed Liberals, though Speight's views are of so advanced a character as almost to border on rabid radicalism. He is the best speaker, though in other respects vastly inferior to McGullough. The latter gentleman is a temperate, thoughtful, self made man, with few prejudices, and with the ardent desire to benefit the constituency. When he was Mayor of the Borough he gave evidences of rare administrative abilities.
