Auckland.

(fbom oue own correspondent.)

YoHr goldfield elections are creating a great deal of interest here, more than you would suppose, and there is a generally expressed feeling of satisfaction at the number of local men who have come forward. The old rJhames Const;tu«rcy has been for the 12 years of its electoral existence used as a strategic post for some political big-wig or another, local men never having been afforded a chance to show their faces. I do not wish to cast odium on Sir George Grey or Mr Sheehan —far from it— but I think after the handsome manner the local men stood aside for the latter and his colleague at the last general election, it would only be an act of common courtesy on the part of the ex-Native Minister to retire from the present contest. Indeed, the interests of the Liberal party demand this—Waitemata, like a ripe plum ready to drop into his mouth, whereas, if he adheres to his present determination the chances are that it will go to a member of the parly who have been aptly likened to the nnimals proverbial for deserting sinking ships. I feel convinced that his- most ardent supporters at the Thames would like to see him stand for some other constituency, and trust that ho will alter his decision before the polling day.
