The Proposed Moanatairi Tunnel.
The following report on Mr Gr. P. Hilton's scheme for a tunnel up the Moanatairi Creek will be presented and considered at the monthly meeting of the County Council to morrow :—
" .Report of the Committee appointed to investigate Mr G. P. Hilton's scheme:
11 Your Committee having carefully considered the synopsis, and the elaborate plans in connection with Mr Hilton's proposed tunnel scheme, are of opinion the project is one which merits the attention of capitalists and miners resident at the Thames and elsewhere. The country through which the adit is proposed to be taken has furnished such returns in gold from the reefs and leaders already worked, and indications of auriferous deposits in their vicinity, as to justify the prosecution of a comprehensive method of prospecting, alike or similar in character to the one submitted to your Committee But, inasmuch as the Council is not legally empowered to assist works of this nature.it is desirable some effort should be made during the ensuing session of Parliament to obtain the requisite legislation, as the proposed scheme is manifestly one of great importance to the district, and if successful, would naturally enhance its prosperity. " Your Committee have much pleasure -in-submitting this suggestion to the favorable considerable of the Council. " Wm. Lang Thobbubn, " W. Deeble, " James Coutts."
