This day. Mr Oliver was sworn in as a member of the Executive Council to day. Mr Travers withdraws from the contest for Te Aro.
The House of Mr W. W. Whiteman, of Carnarvon, was burnt to the ground at 12 last night. Some of the furniture was saved. It was insured in the National for £400.

The Moonstone Directors appoint a manager this afternoon : it lies between Pat Nolan and another.
Wickham talks of contesting one of the City constituencies, in the Ministerial interest. „
(fbom our own correspondent.) J. D. Wickham is a candidate for City East. - Sir George Grey and Mr Sheehan will arrive in Auckland to-morrow. Mr Sheehan is likely to stand for Tauranga. The lawsuit Nicholls v. Nicholls and Marjury has been settled, so the battery will be pushed ahead vigorously. Peter Hansen has been appointed manager of the Waitekauri Company's mine.
