NELSON.

This day,

A fire occurred at Totoranui on Sunday evening last, when the residence of Mr Gibbs, M.H.E., was totally destroyed, together with all its contents. The house was a new and handsome building, containing about seven or eight rooms, but it was only insured for £150, the conteuts being also iusured for £150, both iv the Standard Office. The fire was occasioned by the bursting of a kerosene lamp, and the flames spread so rapidly that nothing was saved.

A large meeting was held last night to consider the Representation Bill. Various speakers spoke with much earnestness iv denouncing the unjustice of tho measure, and the utmost unanimity prevailed. All the resolutions were carried unanimously. They were :—" That this meeting express its indignation at the endeavor of the Ministry to deprive this provincial district of three of its representatives, and earnestly protests against the injustice of the Redistribution of' Seats Bill. That this meeting call upon the members of the district to use every effort in thwarting the proposals embodied in the bill, and pledges itself to support their action. That in the event of the bill passing through the Lower House, a committee, consisting of Messrs Dodson, Levin, Ererett, Haddon, Akersten, Bond and Wilkins be requested to draw up a petition to the Legislative Council, requesting it to use its prerogative to throw out the bill. That copies of resolutions be forwarded to the Premier and the members for the district."
