It has th.t definitely transpired the report received on the Bth, that the sentence of death passed on Midhat Pasha for complicity in the murder of the Sultan Abdul Aziz, had been commuted to banishment to Arabia, is incorrect, aud that the death sentence is to be carried out. The British Government has sent a com. munication to Earl Dufierin, ambas. sador at Coustautmoiple, iostruetiug him to
intercede with the Porte on behalf °* I Midhat, and to urge a commutation of the sentence of death. In the action, Clarke versus Bradlaugh, to recover penalties from the latter for | sitting and voting in the House of Commons without first taking the oath, a verdict has now been finally returned for the plaintiff. Wheat has advanced tid. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, 48s (3d ; New Zealand, 48s 6d. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain at this date is 1,710,000 quarters. Capetown, July 22. News is to hand from Pretoria that the Royal Commission, appointed to undertake the settlement of affairs in Transvaa^ which has been sitting since May, has concluded its labours. A draft Convention has been arranged with the Boer leaders, providing for the retrocession of the whole of the Transvaal to the Boers, subject to the Suzerain Eights of Great Britain. The Convention, moreover, provides for the recognition of claims on the part of the British subjects in Transvaal for compensation for losses during the late war to the extent of £500,000. News to hand further states that the Volkraad will be forthwith elected, and will meet without delay for the purpose of ratifying the convention.
