Inquest.
An inquest was held this afternoon in the Salutation Hotel on the body of the lad James Buckley, who died from the effects of a shot wound. Dr Kilgour was Coroner, and the following gentlemen were empannelled as a jury, Mr Jervis being chosen Foreman : — Messrs H. Penk, Martin, junr., Cocks, Burton, iEnsor, Fagan, dealey, Danby, junr., Whitehead, Denby, and Walters.
Dr M. H. Payne deposed that he was called to attend the boy Buckley on A'l onday, the 27th of June, and found him suffering from a shot wound on the left breast. The bullet entered the chest just above the nipple. He was assisted by Dr Huxtable in his examination. They did all that was necessary, and next day he appeared to be better, but last Sunday he took a turn for the worse, and rapidly sank. He performed a post mortem examination on the body to-day, assisted by Dr Callan, and found that the left lung was disorganised and enormous internal haemorrhage had taken place, the heart was totally devoid of blood, but the other organs were healthy. He and Dr Callan failed to find the bullet, which was not in the cavity of the chest at all, and their opinion was that it must have lodged in the muscles of the back. They did not think themselves justified in cutting the body more than had been done to get it.
Timothy Buckley, father of deceased, deposed that the boy left his house well about seven o'clock on the 27th insj. About haif-an-hour after, he was told his boy was shot, and after takiug him to Mr Hall's to see what was the matter with him, he sent him to the Hospital. He asked his son what was the matter with him, and several times, when asked how it was done, he said " Black Bob " had shot him.Jand that he deliberately pointed the gun at him, laughing at the time.
