Wellington, This day. LOBBY BCMOBS. The continued personal attacks on Sir Arthur Gordon by inspired newspaper correspondents at Wellington are already bringing their deserved consequences, as I hear already one of these creatures has been refused admittance to the office of His Excellency's Prifate Secretary. Mr Moutrose is coming down to represent the Auckland Eveuing Star, but I think be had better remain behind and let both the Herald and Star accept the public opinion of their joint special. I bear on good authority that the Bank of New Zealand has a lien of fifteen thousand pounds on the Otago Daily Times and twelre thousand pounds oo the
high sounding name of your Wellington contemporary. If such is the case, no wonder that both newspapers reflect what some people term the public opinion of the colony ! The voting on the option clauses of the new Licensing Bill iv Committee is a serious stagger to the Government party, especially its two active whips. There is mischief brewing, and it is more significant owing to the extreme carefulness which exists between the Governor and the Premier. There will, in my opinion, be some real fun when the first Imprest Supply measure is brought down in committee of Ways and Means. Major Atkinson is prolonging the evil day as much as possible, but murder will out, and that will be the case when it is being considered. Before the session is much further advanced, I have good grounds for believiug that Sir George Grey has some hand grenades to fire into the Ministerial camp, which, to say the least of it, will make the Premier and his colleagues somewhat alarmed, especially keeping in view that Department cypher codes and state secrets should not, at all hazards, reach your senior member—but so it is, and I pity the Attorney-General and Mr Bolleston when the time comes and the cat is let out of the bag.
Mr Montgomery is reported to be forming a Middle Party, composed of members who are not satisfied with the present Government and a few of Sir George Grey's party, but I do not think ie . will couie to anything. Mr Montgomery will never do as a leader. My | impression ia the session will be very stormy, but that Ministers will hold their own till next election. . It is rumored, and I have good, reasons for believing the rumor is well founded, that correspondence of an unfriendly character has recently taken pla'Se between the Government and Sir Julius Vogel, and that it has ended in the Government returning a letter from Sir Julius which« they considered unjustifiable in its terms. A rumor is current that Sir Julius Vogel is coming out, but it is unfounded. I have seen the original letter from Sir Julius Vogel to a friend, in which he says, "My health is too bad to think of leaving England at present." An effort will be made during the session to have the next meeting of the Eiie Association at Christchurch or Auckland. The Government intend to bring ia a Local Public Works Bill similar to that introduced last year. It is under consideration at the present time. The Government say they are determined to push through the Licensing Bill, notwithstanding Sir W. Fox's amendment. They imagine that it will place more power in the hands of the publicans than the Good Templars. It is understood that the Governor sent home a copy ot Mr Bryce's speech with reference to his resignation, so as to give his own statement relative to his resignation.—Star.
