FLOATING TIMBER DOWN THE BACE; Snpcial report of the Water Eace Committee re the floatage of timber down fi. »«tar race.—"Your Committee have he honour To submit the following report upon and the evidence taken in reference fo the case of floating timber down the County »ater race-Your Committee of opinion that Martin lurlong, bavin* applied for, and received permission to float down Erewood, from a a member of this Council, was in a measure justified m availing himself ot that permission, but your Committee also strongly deprecate such a proceeding, and are of opinion that no member of the Council should interfere wit the functions of the Engineer, or infringe upon a right which can alone be exercised by resolution of the Council."

The following >is the Board of-Works report :^" Your Board have the horror'to submit the following recommendatio' 8 regarding the subjects relegated to them at the last monthly meeting of the Council :—Re J. Punch's contract: l£ That the contractor be ordered to complete his contract in terms of the specification, and, in case of refusal* the surveyor be instrncted to complete the same out of the money due; that the Council favour* ably consider the loss, if any, the contractor may have sustained by the public traffic during the progress of the work. 2. That the surveyor be instrncted to expend the sum of £70 upon the Matt creek road. 3. That the sunreyorlb* instructed to at once lay off the proposed road on the Borough endowment, in continuation of the line now cut through the Waitoki; that, considering the great cost of a suitable bridge over the Waihou, your Board is of opinion a ferry will, ior the present," answer the requirements of the district, and, lastly, when the Borough Council shall have drained the line of road to tie satisfaction of th* surveyor, its fonnatiott be proceeded with without delay. 4. That tenders be called for repairing the Hauraki road, and the sun) of £30 be contributed by the Council in aid of the work. SPECIAL RBPOKT OE THE FINANCE COMMITTEE. Your Committee have the honor t6 make the following recommendation* upon the matters referred to them at the last meeting of the Council:—2. That Mr Howe's application for a refund of the balance of his deposit on the purchase of | the Caledonian mine be not entertained, 2. That the gold duty payable to the Hape mine be placed to Mr Greenville's credit against his water race accounts. The following accounts were examined and passed for payment on the 3rd inst.: —Per Water Eace Committee, £65 6s; aid to drainage—W. S. Greenville, £14 2s ; Pumping Association, £40; Fraser and linne, £12; E. W. Hollis, £5 10s ; audit expenses, £3 10s ; dog collars, £4 17s 6d ; stationery—J. Nodder, £2 lls ; collect >r—Jas. Smith, £39 12s 6d ; printing, &c, Wm Wilkinson, £4 5s 9d ; W. McCullough, £5 17s 6d; rent—J. Thompson, £4 6s 8d ; salaries, £71 ss.
