A Bank at Tauranga Stuck-up.

(Pee Press Association.)

Wellington, This day

Mr Buchanan, the Inspector of the National.Bank here, has receired the following telegram from Tauranga:—"The Bank was attacked last night by burglars. One was caught, after a severe struggle by.Sergt. White and Constable Whelan. The other escaped. No damage was done." Tauhanoa, This day. Further Particulars of the Attempted Burglary. Sergt. White states that Morris, manager of the bank, informed him about a week ago that he suspected some one would try and injure him, and most likely, rob the bank, as suspicious parties were prowling about and dogging him from the club to the bank at night time. Upon this information, Sergt. White kept a vigilant watch on the bank. Everything appeared as usual, and as lie was stationed inside the bank a rap came to the door, and the manager of the bank opened it, upon which a large quantity of pepper was thrown in his face, completely blinding him. At the same time the robber clutched the manager by the throat. Constable Whelan was stationed behind the door, and along with the manager was suffering severely from pepper, but he struck the robber on the head, and Sergt. White covered him with his revolver. The man then caved in after a severe struggle. The prisoner's name is Win. Henry Barh'eld, and upon being search!, the following articles were found on him : a knotted bludgeon, a gag, a piece of rope, a piece of soap, a quantity of pepper, aud a towel. The prisoner had blackened his face, -immediately after the prisoner was secured, Sergeant White lushed out of the bank to see if he could find any accomplices, but only picked up a loaded pistol outside the door. It is supposed there is a gang in town, as Mr Morris saw one or two outside the door.
