The Property Tax payments to the 10th April are—Auckland, '£36,086-; Hawke's Bay, £15,231; Wellington, £40,015 ; Nelson, £12,000; Canterbury, £60,933; Waitaki, £12,841 ; Otago, £53,174; Southland, £8,695.

At the Supreme Court, Edward Tobin

was charged with larceny from the person and sentenced to 12 months' hard labour.

Wm. Michael Downes, charged with feloniously removing the stamps from, a certain deed with intent to use such again, was acquitted on one indictment. There were six indictments against the prisoner charging him with offences of a similar nature, but the Grand Jury found no bills in three of the indictments, and on the fourth he was acquitted. There are two charges yet remaining to be heard. At the conclusion of the business the Grand Jury handed down the following presentment:—The Grand Jury present think that the evidence brought before them in the cases " Queen v. Downes" disclose an utter want of system apd great carelessness in connection with the custody of valuable public documents in the charge of the Land Transfer and Registrar of Deeds Departments. The Court adjourned till to-morrow morning.
