AUCKLAND
Monday. His Grace Bishop Cowie ordained yesterday Mr Hewson, recently from the old land, who proceeds to his appointed sphere of labour in Northern Kaipara.
Mr Frank Campbell was found dead in the Free Lance office this evening. He was an old journalist on the colonial press, and formerly a surveyor in Queensland*. A man named John Wilson was arrested to-day on the charge of extorting money from people in the neighbourhood of Mount Eden. Prisoner called upon Mrs Nairn, and said he was in distress, aud had just landed penniless from Levuka. She gave him food, and finding there was no man in the house he threatened to knock her down if she did not give him money. The Te Aroha Murder.
The trial of Proboffi for the Te Aroha murder will last several days. On hearing Sergeant Mulville's evidence to-day, His Honor remarked that it was a grossly improper thing for police officers to ask a prisoner questions of such a character. Witness said he had not had much experience in such matters. His Honor went on to observe that even had prisoner been previously cautioned, the interrogations were of a character quite beyond the province of a police officer to put.
