CARTERTON.

This day

Messrs Buoney and Beetham, addressed a fairly well attend ': meeting of their coastitents in tbe Town Hall last night. Mr Bunney adrocated a Property and Income Tax, and duties t -, luxuries only. He would reduce the l'\ ,-a Vm vote by £100,000, and make thos » who desired to go above the 4th Standard pay. He condemned the railway management, and advocated giving discretionary power to managers. He entirely supported Bryce's action, and thought it would have settled the difficulty in a week. He was adverse to the County system, aud thought a modified form of Provincialism would have to be resorted to. He advocated the loan of a million for roads end bridges in the country. He would support the present Government which had the confidence of the Country. He hoped Government would only orin;* down a few bills and would sf Jck to them like men. He supported the Welliugton-Foxton railway. Mr BeetUam next spoke, agreeing with Mr Bunney's remarks on education (except that he would give free education only to the 3rd Standard), custon s duties, railway management, etc., but disagreed with him as to Mr Bryce's action, as it would here involved a costly war. He saw no fault with the County system, except want of funds. Next session they would find that .Vee trade and.protection would crop up, but he would vote for free trade.

A vote of thanks to both members was passed.
