Meeting of High School Board of Governors.
The monthly meefing of the above body was held yesterday afternoon^ there being present—His Worship the Mayor, (in the chair), Messrs Marshall, Brodie, Speight, and Bagnall. The Secretary to the Education Department, Wellington, wrote enclosing copies of Admission Register, and Register of Attendance, and stating that if the Board decided to use them iv
the school the necessary number of copies would be forwarded. The Secretary was instructed to make the application.
WATER POWER
The Warden wrote asking what rate per sluice head the Board proposed charging for water power ia connection with the Te Aroha Endowment. After some discussion the following motions were carried: —" That as it is the intention of the Board to dispose of a portion of the" land, and to withdraw the block from the operations of the Mining Act, that the Warden be requested not to deal with applications for water"—Mr Brbdie moved " That the write to the Colonial Secretary, applying for the withdrawal of the land from the operations of The G-old Mining Districts Act." HEAD MASTER'S REPORT. The head master recommended, the advisability of having eight weeks' holiday during the year, and that the secretary should attend the school once a quarter to receive the school fees ; also, that a standing advertisement be kept in both papers. All the suggestions were adopted. THE ENDOWMENT. The report of the committee concerning the leasing of the endowment was read as follows :—" Your committeeJbeg to recommend that the blocks of land surveyed by Mr Bayldpn, excepting lot 15, should be offered for lease by auction on the following conditions :—i. That the term of the lease be 31 years ; 2. That compensation be allowed to the lessee at the expiration of the lease for dwellings, farm buildings, fencing, tile draining, open drains, growing crops, and orchards ; 3. That should the Board and the lessee be unable to agree as to the amount of the compensation, then the matter shall be settled by arbitration. Each party to choose one arbitrator, these to choose an umpire, if necessary. The expense of arbitration to be borne equally by the parties. 4. That the upset rental be 1\ per cent, on the value of the land, a3 estimated by the surveyor; 5. That the rent be paid half yearly in advance, on the Ist of April and Ist October in each year. The Board to have power to re-enter if rent is 30 days in arrear. Your committee believe that land leased on such favorable terms as they propose would be quite as advantageous to the occupier as a freehold.—L. J. Bagnall, Jas. Marshall."
After a lengthy discussion the report was adopted, arid it was decided to engage an auctioneer and have 500 copies of the plan prepared. After some other unimportant business the meeting terminated.
