DUNEDIN.

This day,

The country papers complain of the Chinese monopoly of the goldfields. They now occupy the whole of the available lands in,the Dunstan and Western districts.-

The Dunedin City rate last year amounted to £17,000, all of which, except £10 10s was paid before the closo of the financial year, and judgment for the later amount was obtained.

Through a mistake in shunting, the Dunedin goods train was run into at Merton, and the ballast engine, two waggons, and the cab of the engine were damaged, but without injury to any person. The driver of the ballast engine has been suspended. The Vincent County Council by five to three rejected Cr Pyke's motion to borrow £10,000 for the County for public works.
