W. M. Downes, late managing clerk of Brandon and Son, solicitors, was committed for trial on a first charge of tampering with land registration stamps. Four other charges are being heard against him. He reserves his defence.

The remaining charges against Downes under the Stamp Act, were adjourned to next week for further evidence.

Hemy Anderson, on remand, as being of unsound mind, was discharged, Dr Johnson certifying that he had quite returned to reason.

A public meeting called by Joseph Ivess was held last night to consider the propriety' of. starting a Company to establish a morning newspaper here. Mr Ivess stated lie had already £2,500 towards the capital and another gentleman guaranteed a further £SCD. It was resolved to float a company with, a capital of £5000 in £5 shares. Mr Ivess stated the plant was on its way fro«n England, and would be here in a few days. A Committee was appointed to carry out the projects The Customs revenue here for March was £13,637, and for the quarter ending yesterday was £44,382, as compared with £44,015 for corresponding quarter last year. Beer, duty for Wellington for the quarter is £1142. Owing to the scarcity of water only two hours' supply per day is allowed from the reservoir. The following is the total Property Tax paid to close of the financial year :—-Canterbury, £58,088; Otago, £45,303; Wellington, £38,527; Auckland, £33,474; Hawkes 1 Bay, £14,251; Waitara, £12,106; Nelson, £10,960; Southland, £8,063.— Total, £220,765.
