MES. HAMPSON'S SERVICES.
(To the Editor of the.Evening Star.)
Sib, —I desire through the medium of your columns to offer a' suggestion to the Committee formed to arrange for Mrs Hampson's services to the effect that she should, if possible, devote an afternoon service to children and young persons. The opinion I entertain of the ability of this lady leads me to the conclusion that she could talk to them in a manner which would ensure their attention and render intelligible to their minds the important lessons she desires to te&eh. I noticed large numbers of children at the service last evening, and was strongly impressed with the idea that notwithstanding her remarks were simplicity itself to the mature mind, they were above the comprehension of childhood.—l am, &c,
W. C.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.) SiE.—Whilst I freely acknowledge the earnestness, eloquence, and evident sincerity shown by Mrs Hampson, does not the plan for "converting" the people advocated by her, in common with other revivalists, fail to a certain extent? inasmuch—as far as my experience goes— " converted Church mombers," in their intercourse with their fellow men show very little of Christ's spirit, the same narrowness, selfishness, keen bargaining, jealousy, and backbiting prevail among them as among those whom they pityingly term " the unconverted." It seems to me that abstinence from play going, cards, and dancing is not the chief thing. I have known many a man indulge in all these, who was a better practical doer of the Master's commands than many who would look on him as hopelessly dark. True Christianity is something more than making all safe for the next world; this world ought to share more of its benefits. —I am, &c, A Bboad Chukchman. February 10.
