DEATH OF,' THE EACEHOESE VENUS.
A serious accident occurred on the Eacecourse, Taurauga, on Tuesday afternoon, which resulted in the death of Mr Leonard's Venus, and severe injury to the jockey Mr T. Williams. A match had been arranged between Venus and Mr Eayn's Doubtful for £50 aside, the race being two miles and over 8 flights of hurdles. A start having been made, Doubtful refused the first two hurdles, and had to be taken at them a second time, this gave Venus a good start, and it seemed as though sue would win in an easy canter. At the second hurdle past the winning post, on the second time round the course Venus fell, throwing her rider, Mr Williams heavily to the ground. The horse died in a few seconds having broken its neck by the fall. The rider who was severely cut and bruised about the head as well as badly shaken, was brought into town and taken to the Commercial Hotel, where he was immediately attended by Dr Ginders, and is now rapidly recovering.
