PARAWAI.

The election of a School Committee for the above district took place last evening in the schoolroom, Parawai. There were only about a dozen gentlemen present. There was some difficulty at first in gaining . entrance to the building on account of the key being mislaid, and jokes were bruited abroad at the expense of the out-going committee, to the effect that they wished to burke the enquiry into their guardianship of the past year. Mr E. F. Tizard, Chairman of the outgoing committee said the first duty was to elect a chairman.

Messrs - Spencer and Hogg were pro* posed, but were inelegible as being members of the late committee.

Mr Osborne was then elected, and took the chair.

Mr Tiaard then read the report which showed that the school had progressed under the able training of Mr Johnston and his staff of teachers. The number of scholars on the roll had also increased largely. In the March quarter, it had been 64 this year as against 42 corresponding quarter last year. In the June quarter, it had been 61*2 as against 41 last year; and in December quarter, it had been 729 as against 55 same quarter last year. It also stated that although the last out-going committee had left liabilities behind it to the extent of £4, that sum had been paid off, and there was now a balance of £8 odd in the bank. THE BALANCE SHEET. Mr Hogg read the balance sheet, which showed receipts £29 10s 5d ; expenses, £20 18s 3d, leaving a balance to the good of £8 12s 2d. Mr Adlam said he wished to know what the item £3 paid to Compton, the j late schoolmaster, meant ? Tbe Committee , had no right to give any of its funds to a j teacher, and such a proceeding was illegal. It should have been paid by the Central Committee. Mr Tizard explained that the £3 had been passed at a meeting of the committee held some time ago. The circumstances of the case were that Mr Comptou was requested to leave the school by the Board in order to take charge of another one, but the committee asked him to stay, and the £3 was one week's salary, which the Board refused to pay. The election of the Committee was then proceeded with. Messrs Marshall, Osborne, Veale, Adlam, Hogg, and Bayldon were nominated, but declined to act, as their time was so much occupied in other matters. On the motion of Mr A. Hogg, seconded by Mr A. Hume, Messrs A. J. Allom, E. F. Tizard, Savage, Ansen, P LaDdy, J. Lloyd, and Gillespie were appointed a school committee for the ensuing year. A vote of thanks was passed to the out-going committee, and Messrs Tizard, Hogg, Marshall, and Spencer suitably responded. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the proceedings.
