KAUAERANGA SCHOOL.

. The election pf the School Committee was held yesterday in the schoolroom. Mr W. J. Speight, M.H.E., presided. Mr Newton (Secretary) read the report, which showed that in March last there were 934 children, between the ages of 5 to 14, attending school against 154 absentees —being nearly a proportion of 7 out of B—a Result reflecting credit on the parents and on the district. In reference to absentees, it was found that they could be divided into two classes—the very young, whose parents considered five as too early for school attendance, and those between 13 and 14, who had left school to go to work. At the Boys' School there were 468 names on the roll, with an average attendance of 375, as many as 422 having been present at one time. At the Girls' School the roll contained 325 names, average 256 ; the highest attendance being 279. The report then went on to show that the Education Board had allowed the committee of the district £120 per annum to meet current expenses. After referring to the alterations being made, improvements in the drainage of school premises, and the indebtedness of the committee to the teachers employed in both schools, is said that the Board of Education had met the wishes of the committee with promptitude and liberality: and Mr Newton was thanked for his usefulness and attention to the duties of secretary and treasurer. The balance-sheet, as read by Mr Eenshaw, showed the receipts to have been £133 10s 7d ; expenditure, £125 13a 8d; leaving a balance in hand of £7 16s lid.—On the motion of Mr W. Smith, seconded by Mr Kirkham, the report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following gentlemen were elected a committee to act for the ensuing year :— Messrs Plant, Newtou, Eenshaw, Scott, Greenville, Aicken, and Carpenter. The usual votes to the outgoing committee and the Chair concluded the business.
