Bagnam, Acting-Chairman. ITNG-BATEFtTL PABAWAI. ' - Mr Dean wrote enclosing a petition from a number of ratepayers at Pa«wir«i, praying that the Parawai district should be annexed to the Borough. The pre* vailing opinion of the Council seemed to bo that the sooner Parawai threw in her lot with the Borough, the better, and it was decided to further the Parawai ratepayers in their object. Cr, Thorburn moved the following resolution on the subject:—" That the receipt of Mr Dean's letter, one of tho petitioners, be acknowledged, and the Council pledge itcelf to further the matter in every way." In speaking upon the resolution the worthy Councillor said that if Parawai was once merged into the Borough, it would be the last that would be heard of any porMon of the County wanting to join the Municipality, for after the first sis months-experience of the change the rest of the country would learn all about such matters. He referred to a letter re an injury to a horse at Rotokohu. Why, opposite his door at Tararu a horseman might easily break his nebk^! so uncared for were the roads within the .Borough. ' ; Cr Coutts said the Council and private members had already spent considerable time and money to prevent Parawai from merging/ but so headstrong were the ratepayers that he felt the best coarse was to let them have their wiy. : - r tajd from the number of signatures, in fact of the petition representing the leading men of the Highway Distrticfc, that there could be no doubt as to their intension and the best thing the Council could do would be to assist them in obtaining their object. Cr Carpenter moved that the last clause of the resolution be struck out, which was negatived, the resolution being carried by the votes of tha Chairman, Cra Brown, Coutts, Thorburn, and Porter; against— Crs Carpenter, Deeble, Greenville, and Bagnall. Cr Porter said after such a resolution there should be no further expenditure in Parawai, but it was resolved to proceed with the portion of the Mount Sea Road, for which subscriptions had been received from the inhabitants. A QTJESTIOX OP BKVENT/E. Cr Porter called attention to the fact that several licenses had been refused by the Warden within the County, and as it affected the County revenue, he considered the Council should take some notice of the matter. The subject could nofc be discussed without a suspension of the standing orders, but it is likely to form a matter of attention at the next meeting of the Council.
