WANGANUI.
Yesterday.
At the sale of leases of Harbor Board sections of reclaimed land, the attendance was good but the bidding languid. The five sections nearest the bridge brought 50s per foot, and the others 40s per foot. The appointment of Major Kemp as Native Assessor was gazetted on Thursday last, and caused considerable comment among the natives. A telegram has been received in town from the Native Minister stating that the gazetting of Kemp was the stupid blundering of a clerk. He has gone to Kaorikia, about 15 miles up the river for the purpose of formally taking possession of all lands belonging to the West Coast Natives. The chiefs of Putiki, including Mete Kingi, recognise Kemp's mana and lead* ership.
