DUNEDIN.

This day.

A three-roomed cottage forming a portion of the joint building at the corner of Howe and Leith streets was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. It was occupied by P. Porteous, who with his wife had been staying at Mosgiel for the last fortnight, and the origin of the fire is a mystery. The building was completely gutted, but the adjoining portion of it was saved by the brigade, who promptly put in an appearance. The joint buildings were insured by C. S. Beeves m the National Office for £350.

The Star hears that J. Lowe's services as Engineer of Permanent way have been dispensed with. It is believed that the duties hitherto performed by that gentle* man will be undertaken in future by the department of Engineer-in-Charge for this island.
