CHRISTCHURCH.
This day.
The perjury case against Watt and Murphy has been adjourned till Oct. 16.
Charles Johnston, the man who was accused of stabbing the landlord, Crowther, and the night porter of the White
Hart hotel, was committed for trial. There was a good deal of discrepancy in the evidence, the accused having apparently been in the hotel at half-past' twelve, while the prosecutor's evidence sought to show that the row took place about 11 o'cli ck, the time when the hotel should be closed. The Magistrate commented on this aud hinted that a prosecution for perjury might very well arise out of it. The police were instructed to watch the evidence given on the subject at the Supreme Court.
Some days ago a man named Pearce was shot in the knee while walking on the banks of the Avon. His position has now become so precarious that today his depositions were taken by the E.M. Three lads, supposed to have been concerned in this miscellaneous i shooting were arrested to-day and charged with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
