Half a million of the local loan will be offered to tenderers on Tuesday, the 19th.

It is not intended to dismiss any more employees in the Mines Department, but reduce salaries to the extent of £10,000.

Captain Murdoch of the Cuzco on Wednesday reported a breakdown in the machinery of the Albion, from New Zealand to Melbourne, via Hobartown. A man boarded the Cuzco, and requested information. The mate stated that the vessel could by that time have been safely taken to that port. A testimonial was presented to Mr John Bennett, lessee of the late Victoria Theatre, as a token of public sympathy. An extraordinary proceeding occurred at Wagga-Wagga, in connection with a presumed defaulting debtor. Green, a publican, sued four respectable residents, damages £2000,' for assault and false imprisonment. It appears that plaintiff drew £800. from the bank, and apparently prepared to bolt to Victoria, whereupon defendants, who were his creditors, before daylight, planted themselves near his house; when he came out defendants arrested him —one pointed a pistol at him saying, ■" Pay what thou owest." The man, alarmed, then paid them in full, and when then released, subsequently brought this action. The jury found a verdict for defendants.
