THE SURVEYOR* 8 REPORT was read as follows :—
To the Board of Works, Thames County Council.—l have the honor to report as follows:-—Hastings Biding : The contractor now engaged in making and repairing a portion of the Hastings and Mercury Bay road has almost completed his contract. A further expenditure of about £15 would make this road passable for drays without the passing through any of the lands taken up by selectors, as the drays would then be able to keep the surveyed road. On the Tapu to Waikawau, and Tapu to Thames roads, a considerable number of slips have occurred during the month, which hare only been partially removed, and only as much labour has been expended as would keep the road open, for traffic.— Waiotahi Riding: On the Moanatairi road a considerable number of slips hare been removed during the month, but a great deal still remains to be done to render this road suitable for the large traffic that passes over it. Repairs have been effected during the month on the Waiotahi road, and a large number of slips removed. The heavy dray traffic on this road rendered it necessary to employ a considerable number of men during the month to render it barely passable. The road at the present time is still very much' cut up, and further expenditure is urgently required. — Eauaeranga Riding: Considering the extent of roads and footpaths in this riding, very few men have been employed during the month. The Earaka road would require an expenditure of about.£2o to metal the worst portions of it. The dray traffic on this road is very large.—Parawai Riding : On the main road a considerable amount of metal has has beeu used during the month. Improvements have also been effected on some of the branch roads and footpaths. The Eauaeranga valley road has been kept open for packhorse traffic, but 1 several parts of the road require to be widened to render them safe. — Totara Riding: The worst portions of the Ohinemuri main road have been repaired during the month, and the road from the Kauaeranga to Puriri has been kept fairly open for dray traffic. The branch road leading from Ohinemuri main road to Hikutaia has been fenced, in accordance with the agreement, and is now passable for pack traffic. The old road from Hikutaia bridge to McCaskill's landing on the Thames river has been closed by the proprietor of the land, so that there is now no road by which residents can get to the only Post Office in the district. Ohinemuri Riding.—On the Eatikati road, nearly the whole of the work being done under contract is completed with the exception of the bridges across the Ohinemuri and Waitekauri - streams. The timber for the bridges is all cut, and a considerable portion of it is on the ground. On the Te Aroha road little work has. been done during ' the month. The Puke-Paeroa road is not in a good state, but the draining and Jascining now being done will render it permanently in a passable condition.— AiEXi, Aitken, County Survryor.—lst, SbptemTcreii-iaßa^ - |
