"Pinafore" at the Academy.

The performance of •• Pinafore " at the Academy of JffttSfitit eteninp; ia.*id of the Orphanage *»<i Ladies' Benevolent Society was exceedingly well attended; The cast was the same as on the last representation of the opera with the exception of the part of Little Buttercup, which was filled by Miss Mason. This young lady's piquant acting, singing and make up were excellent, and it was soon apparent that she had formed a very proper estimate of the part, and had studied to make the rendition a success, which it undoubtedly was. Mrs Kilgour was in excellent voice, and sang with feeling and expression. Her most sue* cessful efforts were the duet with .Ralph, commencing— •

Refrain, audacious tar, ■ Your suit from pressing, Remember what you are, And whom addressing! Proud lords do seek my hand In throngs assemble.' The loftiest in the land Bo\vn down and tremble !

And in the second act that part of the seena commencing— '

A simple sailor lowly born, Unlettered and unknown, Who toils for bread from early morn - . Till half the night has flown ! . No golden rank can he impart No wealth of house or landNo fortune save his trusty heart And honest brown right hand ! . And yet he is so wondrous fair That lave for one so passing rare, So peerless in his manly beauty, Were little else than solemn duty I Oh, god of love, and god of reason, say, Which of you twain shall my poor'heart obey ? We must compliment this lady also for the improvement in the dressing of the part, and the same remark will apply to Miss Coney. As Hebe, Miss Coney was highly successful, and won well-merited plaudits. Her acting was more in keeping with the part than on the last presentation of the opera. Messrs Hilton, McGregor, Stewart, and Airey sang and acted well, and we noticed an improvement in the chorus, the voices blending more harmoniously. The proceeds will doubtless afford a substantial benefit to the Orphanage and Ladies Benevolent Society.
