He was intoxicated and attempted to walk from a gravel spit to get to a boat which was crossing for him. - August 24. At a meeting held to consider the noncompletion of the Itiverton-Orepuki railway the following resolutions were passed:—"The meetiug; regrets that Government lias not seen fit to place a sum on the Estimates for the completion of the Orepuki railway, although the same is recommended by the ..Railway Commissioners, and promised by Government ;" "That this meeting strongly urges Government to place a sum on the Supplementary Estimates for the completion of same." It was also resolved to wire the resolutions to the members for the district.
la the case of Louis Schmolls, recently sentenced to two years for shooting it bi» wife, a strong point in his favor was that the bullet could not be found in the fence proving that the pistol had not been loaded. His wife lisa now found, the, bullet embedded in a feather bed. It was a Ferry rifle bullet. SchmoUs' son is in the Invercargill cadets, who are armed with carbines of that description.
